International Adoption

The laws and regulations governing adoption differ from country to country and frequently change. To assist you in your research, LAN provides the latest descriptions and requirements for each country. You can learn more by reviewing the individual Fact Sheets for the many countries Lutheran agencies are working in currently.

To adopt internationally, you must complete a home study, choose a country, and complete the immigration and naturalization requirements necessary for the country you have chosen. In most cases, you will travel to the country to meet your child and complete the legal adoption process in that country.

Your choice of country will be largely shaped by several factors, including:

  1. Your eligibility to meet the country's requirements.

  2. Where you are most likely to get a timely placement.

  3. Cost and travel requirements.

  4. Your interest in the culture and ethnicity.
